The Carpathian Mountains are not a distant view from Charming Chalet — they are the front garden. Predeal, Romania’s highest-altitude town and a well-established ski resort, lies just 4 km away. The Clăbucet and Cioplea slopes draw skiers in winter; in the warmer months the same mountain opens up into the Trei Brazi forest and monastery, the Susai meadow ridge walk, and a string of alpine cafés along the main street.

Poiana Brașov, one of Romania’s premier mountain resorts, is 25 km from the chalet — close enough for a morning on the slopes and an afternoon by the fireplace. The Postăvaru cable car climbs from the resort to the summit, opening up the full ski domain in winter and a network of high-altitude hiking trails in summer; Lake Poiana and the timbered cellars of Sura Dacilor and Coliba Haiducilor — both legendary for traditional Romanian dinners with folk music — round out the day. Closer to home, mountain biking trails thread through the forests around the chalet, and marked walking paths lead from the village into old-growth woodland within minutes.

Culture & History

Brașov’s Old Town, 14 km down the valley, is a compact treasure of medieval architecture, anchored by the Black Church — the largest Gothic church in southeastern Europe — and ringed by merchant houses, guild towers, and cobblestone lanes that have been walked for seven centuries. The Council Square, the Tâmpa cable car to the ridge above the city, the narrow Rope Street, and the Schei quarter with its First Romanian School museum and Catherine’s Gate all deserve your time.

Bran Castle, popularly known as Dracula’s Castle, sits 25 km away, perched on a rocky outcrop above the village of Bran. Beyond the legend, the castle itself is a fascinating piece of medieval fortification and royal residence history.

The surrounding region is scattered with fortified Saxon churches — UNESCO World Heritage sites that speak to a time when Transylvania was a frontier of cultures. Local gastronomy is equally rich: shepherd’s cheese, slow-cooked stews, fresh trout, forest berries, and honey from mountain apiaries. The restaurants and farm tables near Brasov offer some of the most authentic Romanian cuisine you will find anywhere.
