History
Charming Chalet stands on land whose story begins long before any house was built here. The village of Timisu de Sus was once known as Vama Timis — the customs post on the border between Transylvania and Wallachia. For centuries, the Timis Valley served as a controlled crossing point where merchants, couriers, soldiers, and voivodes passed, their passage taxed and recorded at the frontier post that gave the place its name.
Of that bustling border life, nothing remains but the stillness of the mountains, the crisp forest air, and the quiet distinction of a place that has always stood at a crossroads of history. It is on this ground — layered with centuries of passage and purpose — that architect Emil Nadejde chose to build.
The chalet was constructed before 1940, during the final years when private architectural commissions of this scale were still possible in Romania. It was built of brick on a concrete foundation, designed to endure. And endure it has — through decades of political change, through the transformation of the country around it, the house has remained, solid and dignified, a testament to the man who designed it and the era that produced him.
In 2018, the chalet underwent a comprehensive renovation that modernized its infrastructure — plumbing, electrical, heating — while preserving the architectural character and proportions that make it exceptional. The house today is as comfortable as it is historic, equipped for contemporary life without sacrificing a gram of its original spirit.
The Architect
Emil Nadejde belongs to a generation of Romanian architects who believed that buildings should be both beautiful and permanent. His portfolio reads like a catalogue of Bucharest’s most distinguished interwar structures.
He designed the headquarters of the Ministry of the Interior, a building that embodied the institutional ambition of its era. He created the new wing of Bucharest’s North Railway Station, giving the capital’s busiest transport hub a face worthy of a European city. And he built the ALGIU Building at the Magheru intersection — described by architectural historians as the most spectacular edifice at that crossroads, its form inspired by the prow of a ship, cutting through the city’s fabric with the confidence of a vessel under full sail.
The chalet in Timisu de Sus carries the same DNA. The proportions are deliberate. The ceiling heights, window placements, and spatial flow reflect an architect who understood that a house is not a collection of rooms but a single organism that must breathe, balance, and hold together. Nadejde built here not a weekend cottage but a serious work of residential architecture, scaled for the mountains and designed to last beyond his own lifetime.
The Property
Charming Chalet comprises 844 square meters of built area, arranged over four levels: basement, ground floor, first floor, and attic. The plot extends to 1,368 square meters, providing generous garden space and outdoor areas that complement the building’s scale.
